The Power of Your Mind: A Deep Dive into Mindset, Positive Thinking, and Self-Belief

Sep 01, 2023
The Battle Between Default and Direct Mode

After watching a video from Mel Robbins the other day (, I was intrigued by what she was saying about the default and direct mode of thinking. She explains that we all have two modes of thinking: the default mode and the direct mode. The default mode, often referred to as "autopilot," is where we spend nearly half of our day, according to Dan Gilbert of Harvard University. This is the mode where our thoughts drift, and we go through our day without much conscious thinking. On the other hand, the direct mode is where we are present, in the moment, and deliberately choosing our thoughts. The key to a fulfilling life lies in mastering the skill of being a deliberate thinker.

The Neuroscience of Default Thinking

What is the Default Mode Network?

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a series of neurons in your brain that automates certain thought patterns. This network is essential for daily functioning, as it helps us carry out routine tasks without much cognitive effort. However, the problem arises when negative and limiting beliefs become part of this network.

The Cost of Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs, such as "I'm not good enough" or "I can't run a successful business," can be detrimental to your growth and well-being. These beliefs have a cost—past, present, and future. They can hold you back from reaching your full potential and can even affect your mental health.

The Power of Positive Thinking

The Skill of Deliberate Thinking

Positive thinking is not just a state of mind; it's a skill that you can master. The first step in this journey is to identify your limiting beliefs and understand what they are costing you. Once you've identified these beliefs, you can start to replace them with positive affirmations.

The Impact on Your Life

When you change how you think, you change your life. Positive thinking can open doors to new opportunities, improve your mental and physical health, and lead to a more fulfilling life.

The Role of Self-Belief

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

One common limiting belief is the feeling of being an imposter. This belief can be particularly damaging, as it can prevent you from taking risks or pursuing opportunities. By replacing this thought with self-belief, you empower yourself to take action and make changes in your life.

The Future You Deserve

Self-belief is not just about the present moment; it's about the future you deserve. By believing in yourself, you set the stage for a future where you are more confident, more successful, and ultimately, happier.

Mindset Reset: A Process, Not an Event

Changing your mindset is not a one-time event but a continuous process. It requires conscious effort to move from default thinking to direct, deliberate thinking. This is the work of changing the patterns in your mind, and it's a process that you need to repeat continually.

Practical Steps for a Mindset Reset

  1. Identify Your Limiting Belief: Write it down and confront it.
  2. Understand the Cost: What has this belief cost you in the past, what is it costing you now, and what will it cost you in the future?
  3. Replace with Positive Affirmation: Every time you catch yourself in a limiting belief, replace it with a positive affirmation.

The Choice is Yours

You have a choice: you can either continue to live in default mode, letting your limiting beliefs dictate your life, or you can take control and become a deliberate thinker. The power to change your life lies in your mindset, your positive thinking, and your self-belief. So, make the choice today to become a more deliberate thinker and unlock the life you've always dreamed of.
